Taylor wins Curt Daniels Invitational in Portland

Taylor Baseball won the 2nd Championship of the summer with wins over the Salem Dodgers 5-1 in the semi-final and a 9-5 win over Chaffey Baseball in the Championship. Taylor finished the Portland tournament with a 6-0 record and outscored there opponents 60-13. It was the 3rd consecutive championship for Taylor at this tournament. In the first game Kurt Haakenstad was the winner with a complete game effort, he allowed 1 unearned run on 5 hits, struck out 4 and walked 3. Taylor got on the board with an RBI single in the 4th by Garrett Patterson. The game broke open in the 6th with an RBI infield single by Stephen Wells and a 2 run double by Chris Sturdivant.
In the championship Taylor scored 9 runs in the 1st inning on 9 hits. Wells led off with a homerun, Sturdivant, Stephen Hagen and Ryan Peterson each hit consecutive doubles. Brendan Gardner-Young then had a drag bunt basehit followed by a sacrifice fly by Patterson. Wells and Sturdivant hit back to back triples followed by another hit by Hagen to finish the scoring. Chaffey pitchers shut Taylor down the rest of the way and Josh Rosser made the great start hold up allowing 5 runs on 7 hits, he struck out 2 and walked 1. The game was the second time that Rosser pitched and won the Final of a tournament. |
